Selling into Europe from the US? Here’s what you need to know about European VAT for US companies.
If you sell on Amazon, Shopify or eBay and store stock in the EU, import goods in your own name or make other taxable supplies there, you may need one or more European VAT registrations. The exact requirements depend on where your goods are stored, how they enter the EU and whether you sell through a marketplace or your own website.
hellotax helps US companies manage VAT registration, reporting obligations, and ongoing compliance, so you don’t have to navigate multiple European tax systems on your own.
VAT registration
Where registration is required and supported by our services, we help arrange VAT registration in the relevant countries, including fiscal representation where applicable, helping you meet your European VAT requirements.
OSS setup and IOSS readiness
OSS can simplify the reporting of eligible cross-border B2C sales within the EU. For eligible low-value goods imported from outside the EU, we can assess your IOSS readiness and wider VAT structure, but hellotax does not currently provide standalone IOSS registration or act as an IOSS intermediary.
Monthly & quarterly filing
We prepare and submit VAT returns in line with the applicable filing schedule, with a dashboard showing what’s due and when.
How it works
- Free assessment. Tell us where you sell and where your stock is stored โ we’ll identify which countries may require VAT registration and explain your European VAT requirements.
- We register you. Local VAT numbers, fiscal representation, and OSS setup are handled end-to-end by our team.
- We file, you sell. Ongoing monthly and quarterly VAT returns are prepared and filed on your behalf, tracked through a single dashboard.
European VAT for US Companies: OSS explained simply
The EU’s One-Stop Shop (OSS) allows eligible sellers to report intra-EU cross-border B2C sales through a single quarterly return, reducing the need for separate VAT registrations solely because customers are located in multiple EU countries.
It can be especially useful for a US company that holds an EU VAT registration and dispatches goods from an EU stock location to consumers in other EU Member States.
It’s the single biggest simplification available to a US seller shipping into the EU.
OSS covers
Eligible cross-border B2C sales where goods are shipped from one EU country to a consumer in another EU country.
OSS doesn’t cover
Domestic sales from locally stored stock, imports, stock transfers between EU countries, and B2B transactions are not reported through Union OSS. These activities may create separate local VAT registration and reporting obligations.
We handle both: your local registrations where you store stock, and your OSS return for everything cross-border.

Common European VAT triggers for US companies
US companies commonly need a European VAT registration when they:
- Store stock in an EU warehouse or Amazon FBA fulfilment centre.
- Import goods into the EU in their own name.
- Make domestic sales from stock held in an EU country.
- Transfer stock between EU countries.
- Carry out other taxable activities that create local VAT obligations.
Understanding your European VAT requirements early can help avoid registration delays and compliance issues.
Many VAT issues arise because sellers are unaware of their obligations until stock is already stored in Europe or sales have already taken place. Common mistakes include missing VAT registrations, incorrectly relying on OSS, or failing to report stock transfers between EU countries. Read our guide to common VAT mistakes in the EU for US sellers to learn how to avoid the most frequent compliance errors.

Frequently asked questions
I’m a US company with no EU entity โ can I still register?
Yes. A US company can obtain VAT registration in many European countries without establishing an EU company. Depending on the country, fiscal representation, additional documentation, or other local requirements may apply.
Does OSS replace local VAT registrations?
Not always. OSS can simplify the reporting of eligible cross-border B2C sales, but local VAT registrations may still be required for activities such as stock storage, imports and domestic sales.
Do I need European VAT for US companies if I sell through Amazon FBA?
In many cases, yes. Storing stock in an EU Amazon fulfilment centre can create local VAT obligations and reporting requirements.
Do I need to register everywhere I sell, or just where I store stock?
You commonly need local VAT registration where you store stock, import goods in your own name, or make domestic taxable supplies. Eligible intra-EU cross-border B2C sales may then be reported through OSS, but OSS does not cover imports, domestic sales, stock transfers, or many B2B transactions. Your European VAT requirements depend on your business activities.
How long does it take to get set up?
Registration timelines vary by country and depend on the tax authority, the completeness of the application, and whether fiscal representation or additional documentation is required.
As a general guide, the Netherlands and Poland are often among the fastest for registration, with applications frequently completed in 2โ6 weeks. Countries such as France and Ireland may take 6โ12 weeks or longer, depending on the circumstances and the tax authority’s workload.
During your free assessment, we’ll provide estimated timelines based on the countries where you need VAT registration and your business specifics.
Do I need European VAT for US companies if I only sell through my own website?
It depends on how you sell and fulfil orders. VAT obligations can arise from activities such as storing stock in the EU, importing goods or making local sales.
Can I switch from my current VAT provider?
Yes. We can help review your existing setup and explain the switching process. The timeframe depends on the countries involved, your filing status and the availability of the required documentation.
