EORI numbers are part of the European Economic Operators Registration and Identification system. The combinations of numbers and letters are used to clearly identify every economic operator who transports goods across the borders of the European Union. The EORI number is therefore required for intra-European transports and trade, for example from the Czech Republic to Germany, but also for import and export activities, for example from Asia to the Czech Republic.
When do I need this number in the Czech Republic?
Every trader and transporter and every company and private person throughout the EU must be able to identify themselves with an EORI number as soon as they regularly deal with customs. With a few exceptions, every economic operator needs his own, but only one, EORI number.
Departments of multinational companies, for example, use the number of the headquarters and do not need their own EORI identification number. Furthermore, an EORI registration is usually only necessary for those economic operators who submit at least 9 customs declarations per year. You can find more information about these exceptions on our overview page.
Basically, all dealers, transporters, companies and private individuals only need a single number and therefore only need to obtain an EORI number in one EU country. The following applies: people and companies that are based in the Czech Republic should register there. Companies that do not come from the European Union can freely choose the country of EORI registration. Most of them decide to register in the country in which they are also registered for the OSS or in which they carry out import and export activities. This makes it easier to cope with the administrative tasks.
The one EORI number can then be used in all countries of the European Union for the transport of goods, as it contains a country code and a unique combination of numbers that uniquely identify the economic operator.
What does the EORI number look like in the Czech Republic?
The country code that uniquely assigns an EORI number to the country in which it was issued is called the ISO code. For the Czech Republic this is CZE. The code is followed by a series of numbers, between nine and fifteen depending on the EU country, which uniquely identify the owner of the number. In most EU countries this number corresponds to the tax number of the economic operator. In the Czech Republic the numeric code is 11 digits long. An EORI number issued in the Czech Republic can look like this:
CZE12345678912
Foreign EU companies that want to set up a company in the Czech Republic receive the EORI number when they register. As mentioned, Czech companies should register themselves. Non-European companies usually register for an EORI number in the Czech Republic when they are registered there for the OSS – the One Stop Shop. OSS and EORI generally have nothing to do with each other, but both are usually necessary to legally trade in Europe and the submission of documents for both OSS and EORI is usually only possible in the national language in the Czech Republic. A Czech tax advisor commissioned for OSS can also take care of the EORI registration and save you a lot of administrative effort. Find out more here.
